A low-pressure system sitting to the north-west of Scotland is feeding bands of rain and showers south-eastward. This setup, known as a “showery westerly”, means the weather changes quickly within a single day. One hour you may see sunshine, the next a sharp downpour. The Met Office notes that these conditions are typical when the jet stream lies just to the north of the British Isles, allowing Atlantic systems to brush the UK without stalling.
How should you prepare for unsettled conditions?
For weather London and the South East, expect the driest and brightest conditions, though a light jacket remains sensible. In weather Birmingham and the Midlands, showers become more likely from late morning.
